>>The DV format is a complete specification for a new, all digital video format intended primarily for prosumer -- and eventually consumer -- applications. It was developed by the Digital VCR Conference, colloquially named "DVC." The DV format has been adopted by 55 manufacturers (as of March 1995). These manufactures include Sony, Matsushita (Panasonic), JVC, Philips, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Sharp, Thomson, and Sanyo. The specification -- simply called DV -- was approved in September 1993. The DV format offers two cassette sizes: the Standard 4-hour (125mm by 78mm by 14.6-inches thick) and the Mini 1-hour (66mm by 48mm by 12.2mm thick). DV format VCRs will accept both cassette sizes, while the Sony DCR-VX1000 uses only Mini DV cassettes. Sony has released a professional version of DV called DVCAM.
